She was selected to the All-Decade Team for the 1980's, and each was selected to several All-State Teams. She set standards for hard work, dedication, and a team first attitude and thus was a role model and leader for others on their team. Rarely has a school had such talented individuals and her teammates, who dominated their sports for nearly a decade.

Rankin

Football: Both were indispensable members of the UNDEFEATED football team of 1958 (OK, one tie, but that was with the fabled Highlands team). They were the offensive guards and defensive linemen, at 165 pounds, small by any standard, even then. They played with fierce intensity and were inspirational for the entire team. Although that team had other talented members, some already in the DHS HOF, all would be the first to admit that their achievements would not have been possible without the efforts and leadership of the Rankins.Jerry was named Most Valuable Lineman in 1958. He also excelled in Track, especially in the 440 which led to a scholarship at Eastern University. After college, Jerry returned to Danville joining his father in the family businesses and volunteered as a Coach in the City Youth Football league. His fabled BLUE TEAM lost a total of only 5 games over 15 seasons and among those he coached, at least 5 became Division I scholarship football players.Billy was Co-Captain of the 1959 team which lost only 2 games. He tragically died at an early age (23) in September of 1966 from accidental electrocution at a local mill where he was a partner. Because of his embodiment of the ultimate effort player, DHS Football awards the Billy Rankin Hustle Award in his honor.Every team has a heart, and for the undefeated team of 1958, that heart resided in these brothers, Billy and Jerry Rankin. The Hall of Fame is honored to have the Rankins take their well-deserved place among its members.
