Gene was on three separate occasions the Athletic Director at Alabama A&M University, and also served as Dean of Men, Dean of Students, Asst Professor of Health and PE, Asst Football Coach, and Golf Coach for 18 years during which his teams won 7 SIAC Conference Championships. He was also the Athletic Director at Morris Brown University in Atlanta. He has been inducted into multiple Athletic Halls of Fame in Alabama, including those of Huntsville-Madison County, Jackson State University, Alabama A&M, and the Booster Club of Huntsville.

Multifaceted services to DHS Athletics, DHS System, and the City of Danville.
Played football at EKU, graduating in 1957. Coached with Roy Kidd at Madison-Model HS for years before coming to Danville in the 70s.
At DHS Asst Coach for Football and track, as well as founded the DHS Wrestling Program with Tom Sellers, served as assistant principal and Principal in Danville Schools, and served on the Danville School Board and as its Chairman.
One of the founding fathers of the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville.
Outstanding Citizen Award by the Danville Chamber of Commerce in 1982.
