All-around athlete and scholar - Valedictorian class of 1960. Student body President and Student Council President.

Offered scholarships to University of Kentucky in Football, Baseball and Swimming.

 

Attended Naval Academy Prep School Co-captain of Basketball Team.

 

Transferred to the University of Kentucky Ranked #1 academically on football team.Played one year under Coach Bradshaw as part of "Thin Thirty"

Football

Co-Captain, 3 years varsity, playing halfback and defensive end.

MVP by teammates in 1935.

Holds the record for the longest punt 97 yards!

Selected as All Time DHS Punter Team of 1925-1950.

 

Played football at Centre College.

Coach of 1958 undefeated team and named Ky Coach of the Year by Courier Journal.

Inducted into KHSAA and Western Kentucky University's Hall of Fame as player and coach in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

Coached at Bowling Green High School (1959-65) and from there to Western Kentucky University 1966-76.

 

Coach Pickens died June 13, 2000 from ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease). Several of his DHS football players served as pall bearers.

 

College 1947-50 at Western Kentucky University where he was All KIAC Tailback as a freshman, All OVC quarterback in 1948 (first year of league).

 

Holder of longest standing record in OVC four interceptions (safety on defense) in Western's victory over rival Eastern Ky University in 1948. No. 1 Pitcher for WKU 1948, 1949, 1950, setting school's single game record of striking out 20 batters."

Transferred to DHS from Parksville HS his junior year having never played HS Football, but with quite a record in basketball.

 

Two-year starter and star in both basketball and football (two way starter on 1962 AA Football Champions) earning All State honors in both sports.

 

Played four years at Eastern Ky University.

DHS Soccer field became the Gary Reynolds field in 2009"

Wrestling (Assistant) for 25 years only because he could not be named Head Coach unless paid, which he refused.

Coached 10 State Wrestling Champions

Coached 10 2nd place finishers; 7 3rd place finishers; 11 4th place finishers and 1 6th place finisher.

Coached 39 athletes to a place or win in the Kentucky State Tournament

Official Score Keeper at the State Tournament for over 50 years

 

Graduate of McCallie School, TN, where he was Mid-South Conference Champion and Runner Up in his weight class."
